Christmas in Austria - Innsbruck

Christmas in Austria - Innsbruck - Hofkirche
8:00am Breakfast in the hotel.
9:00am Meet at reception for a walking tour through the old town of Innsbruck. Innsbruck became the capital of all Tyrol in 1429. In the fifteenth century, the city became a center of European politics and culture as Emperor Maximilian I resided in Innsbruck in the 1490’s. The city benefited from the emperor’s presence, as can be seen, for example, in the so-called Hofkirche/Court Church and the Imperial Hofburg. Duke Sigmund der Münzreiche (the Rich) had a castle erected at a right angle around the city gate of Innsbruck. Under Emperor Maximilian I, the Hofburg was enlarged. Thereafter, it was regarded as the most beautiful building of the late Gothic period. Guided tour at Court Church, a Gothic royal court church and mausoleum built in 1553. It is notable for its tomb of Emperor Maximilian and the elaborate Silver Chapel. You will be impressed by the 28 larger-than-life-size statues of Maximilian’s real and legendary ancestors, including King Arthur of England. On our guided tour, we will visit the Hofburg and the Court Church. We will take a short walk through the old town of Innsbruck and see the world famous Goldenes Dachl, a magnificent oriel from the late Gothic period with a roof made of 2738 gilded copper tiles built for Maximilian I. We will pass the St. James’s Cathedral, an 18th-century Baroque cathedral and walk through the picturesque old town with its wonderful renovated houses. The medieval square in front of the Golden Roof is transformed into a traditional Austrian Christmas Market, where you can try out typical Tyrolean food and shop at the many small shops of the market. The snow-capped mountains of Innsbruck in the background provide the perfect seasonal atmosphere. Walk along Maria Theresienstrasse, named after the Empress Maria Theresia. (Entrance fee to Hofkirche and Hofburg included).
